About Stephen Thurlow

    Mr. Thurlow was formerly the Department Chairman of Music at Marmion Academy in Aurora Illinois, a position he held since 1984.

    Along with his musical compositions for stage, he has a broad base of experience in directing concert band, marching band, jazz ensemble, chorus, and musicals.

    Mr. Thurlow has received multiple outstanding teacher awards, and is a member of the A.S.B.D.A., NAfME, and I.A.J.E.


    Mr. Thurlow is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education and a Master’s degree in Applied Horn. He continued his education in post-graduate work at Yale University in Applied Horn, St. Olaf University, as well as studying with Helen Hirsch (former principal horn of the Chicago Symphony and first women in the orchestra) at the American Conservatory in Chicago.

    Mr. Thurlow has been selected to conduct the I.M.E.A. district 7 honor jazz ensembles on two occasions as well as being an area clinician. He has conducted semi-professional stage performances in Naperville’s Summer Place, taught horn at North Central College and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and directed the Aurora All-City Jazz Ensemble. Under the direction of Mr. Thurlow, his bands consistently received first division ratings in I.H.S.A. and W.S.M.A. competitions, as well as winning the Northshore Jazz Festival twice, and Jazz In the Meadows three times.
